Selective use of a renowned source

SO Indaver Ireland has now taken to quoting the World Health Organisation's (WHO) stance on modern incinerators, and isn't it reassuring to know that they rely so heavily on that renowned source for advice (Irish Examiner, April 9).

Selective use of a renowned source

As we all know, the WHO is a world recognised body that governments especially look to for guidance in relation to health and environmental matters.

Why then did Indaver Ireland ignore the WHO guidelines on the siting of a hazardous waste incinerator in Cork harbour?

These guidelines are drawn up by the WHO to ensure that the most stringent conditions are observed in the location of such a potentially dangerous facility.

At the oral hearing in September 2003, we heard that the proposed incinerator failed on 13 out of the 14 conditions laid down in the WHO guidelines.

What a pity Indaver was not as quick to heed the advice of the WHO in siting this facility in Cork harbour.
