Who will take on the road tolls monopoly?

YOUR correspondent Marie Ahern (Irish Examiner letters, December 17) wonders if she is the only person who is outraged at the increase in toll charges.

Who will take on the road tolls monopoly?

I am sorry to say that, apart from myself, she probably is. What did I do? I wrote to the then Transport Minister Seamus Brennan who was hell-bent on breaking up Bus Éireann’s monopoly.

I pointed out to him that he was presiding over and supporting the biggest monopoly of all, namely road tolls, a never-ending, ever-increasing source of income for the Government and private investors.

We all know of the need for massive investment in roads, but where are the huge taxes on petrol and cars going?

Those misguided politicians involved in inciting people not to pay bin or water charges hadn’t the guts to tell those they seemed to be supporting that those services were being paid for by many people who appreciated they could not be provided free.

None of those politicians has protested at toll charges. Why not?

I would like to hear from people who may be interested in making an organised protest in the event of a toll being introduced on the Fermoy by-pass.
