When incineration solved a problem

WE would be grateful for the opportunity to clarify a claim made by Mary Fitzgerald in her letter (Irish Examiner, December 9).

When incineration solved a problem

Ms Fitzgerald referred to a situation where dioxin contamination of the Belgian food supply resulted in a loss of 500m in revenue and implied that the source of these dioxins was from the incineration of waste.

We wish to clarify that this contamination was as a result of inappropriate recycling of PCB oil. This oil was mixed with animal feed instead of being disposed of appropriately by incineration.

In fact, it was agreed that incineration was the most environmentally sustainable solution for the disposal of the contaminated food. Incineration was not the source of the dioxin problem it was the solution to the problem.
