We’re awaiting our turn on the weekly soapbox

WE’VE had to endure interminable carping and endless anti-Government sniping from Fergus Finlay on your opinion page, for longer than I care to remember.

So imagine my sighs of relief on hearing of the recent return of Mr Finlay to his old job as Labour Party press officer, knowing that it would almost certainly signal his departure from the high platform of objective comment that is the Irish Examiner opinion page.

One would imagine that Mr Finlay’s partisan musings would hold even less water in an opinion column of a national newspaper, given that they are coming directly, albeit reheated, out of the rather bockety engine room of Labour thinking.

Surely that level of invective is more at home on the Labour Party website?

So imagine my surprise to find that the bearded one is still with us, continuing to opine at length and present us with his weekly rants and sagacious insights.

But I’m not bitter.

Instead, may I congratulate the Irish Examiner on its willingness to provide a weekly soapbox to a political party.

And in the true spirit of political competition, may I now enquire as to when the same facility will be extended to the Progressive Democrats?

We also have a lot to say!
