Let’s make a stand for our children’s sake

WHY aren’t the people of Cork out in their thousands protesting against the draft licence which the EPA has granted Indaver for two incinerators in Cork harbour.

Let’s make a stand for our children’s sake

It is now evident there will be no one responsible to monitor the health of people living within a 40-mile radius of Ringaskiddy: that’s roughly from Youghal to Clonakilty.

The departments of health and environment, the Health and Safety Authority and the EPA have all admitted they will be not be responsible for monitoring our health.

The EPA issued the legal ticket to pollute our air, and they have already granted a draft licence to the company for a second incinerator which means they won’t even have to apply for planning permission from the county council. The county development plan specifically excluded contract incineration on this site while Bord Pleanála’s senior inspector gave an unprecedented 14 reasons why it shouldn’t go ahead.

Despite all of this, the EPA still feel they don’t have to appear and answer questions to a concerned public as to why they have granted a draft licence for two such huge developments, even though their director, Dr Mary Kelly, informed the Department of Health last year that there were no systems in place to monitor the health of those living near an incinerator.

The time to act is now. We must give our support to those residents, ordinary mothers and fathers, who have put their own lives on hold to question those who seem to favour big business over our children’s future.

The people of Cork and Ireland should make a stand for their children’s sake. Just look at the mess Irish Steel was left in after the current Government sold it for £1.
