Mary’s colourful language sees off the politically correct begrudgers
Dare we mention she might be ‘in the pink’ now?
The lovely old Irish saying about seeing off begrudgers comes to mind.
But Mary does have a very long way to go as regards experience. I think Col John Glenn went back in space at 77. Now there is a real ‘equality’ challenge for the PC industry to grasp. But will they?
However, I do need an urgent favour. The other morning there was an ESB ‘blackout’ in my area and 400 homes were affected, including my own. And I actually used the forbidden term ‘blackout’. Not only that, but last week a neighbour suffered a ‘blackout’ and fell, and again I used the forbidden term.
Firstly, where can I go for forgiveness and absolution?
Secondly, how am I to describe ‘temporary interruptions of normal supply’ to the ESB in future?
I am also very confused because I recall Tom Crean and Ernest Shackleton in the Antarctic experiencing a ‘white-out’. Is that term still OK?
I have no doubt that if in the Deep South in the USA in 1860, a plantation owner described a pink Irishman as “working like a black”, it would have been the height of praise - and only a strong recommendation for black workers, too.
Our grandchildren will probably substitute ‘like a Chinese’ in their turn.
There is only one way to deal with the pure nonsense of manufacturing a storm from such trivia, and that is Mary’s robust response.
