Was Dando a victim of the war against Serbia?
In the spring of 1999 Britain was involved in a NATO war. Israeli intelligence warned of two-man hit teams seeking targets of opportunity in Britain.
The appeal presented by Jill Dando for Kosovan Albanian refugees would raise her to possible target level. The killing of 16 radio/TV Serbia workers by NATO bombing on April 23 would have elevated BBC targets to high priority.
Remarks by Tony Blair and Clare Short defending the bombing upped the ante.
Jill Dando was a soft but high-profile target. With a London Serb population of more than 30,000, the assassin could have had access to local knowledge.
All he would have to do would be positively to identify Ms Dando, and the rest would come easily to a professional assassin. (Who was that mysterious man who spoke to Jill at the British Legion ball?)
Add the six crimp marks on the cartridge, which the Los Angles Police Department said was the hallmark of the killer, the claims of responsibility phoned to the BBC in London and Belfast, and CCIS reports. I think a case for a war connection is more than just circumstantial.
All we lack is the hitman, but he is long gone. Five years gone. Oh, well, George will have to do then.
