Sex education offers the best protection

I WRITE this in relation to the recent comments by Health Minister Mary Harney on the use of the morning-after pill by children as young as 11.

Sex education offers the best protection

Ms Harney is overlooking the root of the problem and has a defeatist attitude. To eradicate this situation in our society we need to face the problem head on and look for solutions, not methods of concealment.

To begin with, sex education must take place in all schools. Through this education, teens and pre-teens would get an accurate knowledge of the consequences of such activity.

Everybody knows the danger of getting pregnant but this is not enough to stop young children from engaging in sexual intercourse. However, if we were informed about the consequences, the number of children and young adults having sex would drop significantly.

This proposal by Mary Harney is, in my opinion, nothing short of appalling and ignorant of the real problems that face mine and future generations.

Sadly, the morning-after pill and other methods of protection will not offer the true panacea that Ms Harney is hoping for.

The only way forward regarding this problem is through education, and the belief that prevention is most certainly better than cure.
