When Africa cheers, why do we stay silent?

SHOULD Ireland fail to qualify for the 2006 World Cup finals, as their woefully inept performance in Cyprus suggests, we will be expected suddenly to take in interest in other teams.

When Africa cheers, why do we stay silent?

Yes, World Cup qualifiers are happening in countries other than ours - and when teams like Togo and the Ivory Coast take part next June, many media executives will be wishing they aroused our interest in their fortunes much earlier. The unprecedented euphoria that greeted first-time qualification in these countries - as well as Ghana and Angola - went almost entirely unnoticed here.

It becomes abundantly clear how difficult it must be to generate media coverage of Africa’s tragedies when we can’t be bothered to share their joy in celebration. In football circles this past weekend, there was talk of a dramatic revolution in African football, yet you had to scour teletext and print to find anything about it. How sad, considering the number of Africans who have made their home here and contributed richly to our country.
