Security barrier is a cover for land-grab
The Israeli left originally proposed the concept of a security barrier along the Green Line between Israel and the Palestinian territories in the 1990s.
At the time, Ariel Sharon and the annexationists opposed the construction of a security barrier because they accepted that such a wall would mark the future border between Israel and a Palestinian state.
Sharon’s change of stance has been marked by a change in the route of the wall away from the Green Line. Under his plans, the wall, which runs deep into the West Bank, will be used effectively to annexe huge swathes of Palestinian territory to Israel.
The Palestinians will be left not with a viable state, but with a glorified reservation surrounded on all sides by the Israeli wall.
The International Court of Justice ruling that the wall is not justified by Israeli security concerns has put an end to that lie.
The route of Israel’s wall, as the world court found, is tantamount to de facto annexation of Palestinian land.
The UN must now take measures to ensure that Israel adheres to the court decision.
