Same-sex marriage: the ‘civilised world’ view

PAUL KOKOSKI claims the UK is out of touch with the rest of the “civilised world” by allowing legal recognition for same-sex relationships (Irish Examiner letters, December 28).

I fail to understand how Mr Kokoski came to that conclusion given that more and more countries are now legally recognising same-sex relationships (South Africa, Spain, Canada, New Zealand, etc).

Mr Kokoski would appear to want the world to go backwards in terms of civil rights for lesbian and gay citizens. Surely this would not be a civilised world.

Mr Kokoski mentions that the bible condemns homosexual acts. I presume he refers to the Book of Leviticus.

It has many references which modern-day (civilised) societies would consider abhorrent and illegal, such as permitting slavery and the stoning and burning of people. I wonder does Mr Kokoski dogmatically follow everything in the Book of Leviticus.

He contends that "acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle undermines the family as the basis of society. By rejecting homosexual activity one does not limit, but rather defends, personal freedom and dignity."

It is my belief that the opposite is the case condemning gay people harms their chance of having meaningful relationships and to belong as part of a family. It reinforces negative stereotypes and it is certainly limits personal freedom and dignity.

If any State is out of touch with the rest of the civilised world, it is probably the Republic of Ireland for failing to give legal recognition to gay relationships.
