Every fur lining comes under cloud of cruelty

WITH World Animal Week just over (free publicity for the pet food companies aside), it is timely to draw attention to the appalling cruelty involved in fur production.

Every fur lining comes under cloud of cruelty

With the dramatic decline in the sales of real fur coats in the past decade, fur traders have been redirecting their efforts and pushing real fur as trimmings for coats, jackets and accessories, with some success.

In many shops in this country it is depressingly easy to find real fur on many items of clothing, as well as bags, boots and household ornaments.

Mink, fox and rabbit are the predominant species used, but consumers should also beware that cat and dog fur imported from China is used in some products and either mislabelled or not labelled at all.

The suffering inflicted on these animals before their short, pathetic lives are ended either by gassing, electrocution or strangulation is sickening.

In the months ahead the Alliance for Animal Rights will be concentrating on raising public awareness of the suffering involved in this miserable trade. A particular target of our educational campaign will be shop-owners who, wittingly or unwittingly, stock real fur products. In the meantime, we appeal to consumers not to buy any product containing real fur.

Put simply - if you don’t buy, they won’t die.
