Poles apart: motorists face new junction menace

THE recent traffic lights installation at the Bull McCabe pub road junction on the Airport Road in Cork includes two excellent examples of mindless engineering which fit very nicely into the well-known Irish phrase, 'yerra, 'twill do.'

Poles apart: motorists face new junction menace

Travelling up the airport hill on the foothpath or the cycle lane, users will find that the unmarked pole holding up the traffic lights is placed on the centre dividing line between the two.

Travelling down the hill the pole holding up the pedestrian lights is placed on the outside of the cycle lane and on the edge of the road, just at the point where the road narrows.

At night this unmarked pole is almost invisible to motorists approaching from the northern side of the junction. It is a serious hazard to all motorists travelling down the hill. Would this installation meet any known safety standard?
