IT is unlikely that the result of this year’s US presidential election will be as close as the last. However, an intriguing possibility arises.

Currently, John Kerry is ahead in 18 states with an average lead of 8.9%. George W Bush leads in 31 states with an average lead 15.6%. One state, Florida, is tied.

Could it be that in 2004 the boot will be on the other foot with Mr Bush winning the popular vote but with Mr Kerry wining the electoral college and hence the White House?
