Bush’s opponents reviled and silenced

YOUR columnist Fergus Finlay was squarely on the mark (Irish Examiner, December 13).

Bush’s opponents reviled and silenced

For those of us here in America who must endure the fascist remake of our once noble beacon of liberty, the policies and practice of the Bush administration are an almost unbearable cross.

We now have illegal detentions instead of the right of due process.

And illegal ‘renditions’ that Condoleezza Rice maintains do not happen - yet the fact stands uncontested that the US is kidnapping and imprisoning Muslim men and possibly women and children. Torture of these detainees flies in the face of basic human dignity.

The US is shamed before the world while the EU kowtows to Rice. Bullies always get their just desserts in due course. I only hope that our world hasn’t run out of time.

The US is currently under the administration of men who are not up to the task of global responsibility. There are many here who protest against the insanities of George W Bush and our Congress. We are reviled, censored, disavowed, and silenced.

Some of us will continue to speak out, but I must concede it hasn’t accomplished much to date.
