Amnesty ignores men abused by women
Whether or which, the latest statement has the same unjust omission there is not a word about domestic violence against men.
This is a serious omission by an organisation that claims to be concerned with human rather than exclusively female rights.
Jim Loughran, a spokesman for Amnesty, said in March that "domestic violence is not a women's issue, it's an issue of human rights".
Why then does Amnesty ignore the fact and it is a fact that men suffer domestic violence, too? What about the human rights of these men?
We can do without outrageous claims that a quarter of Irishmen are guilty of violence against women, but we do need independent, trustworthy research to find out the facts about domestic and other forms of violence between the sexes.
The Government should be ashamed of itself for allowing this injustice against men to continue, not only in the area of domestic violence but in health policy where there is a special programme for women, travellers, children and the elderly, but none for men.
But what we need above all is one advocacy group for women and men that will use taxpayers' money to ensure both are protected when needed, and treated justly in every area of life.
