Royal visit could heal wounds

RUMOURS have become stronger lately that Britain’s Queen Elizabeth’s visit will take place soon, but only to Northern Ireland.
Royal visit could heal wounds

Would it not be a good idea that this will be extended to the Republic of Ireland as a formal invitation?

It could help to soothe and heal many of the wounds Ireland and England have inflicted on each other.

Much could be done on our side under the auspices of President Mary McAleese who has tirelessly endeavoured to spread peace in our troubled country.

Cobh would be an ideal venue.

Situated on the Great Island of Cork harbour, with only limited access, it is easily defensible while still having all the amenities necessary for such a visit.

Leaders from all parts of the political divide in Ireland, both North and South, could also be asked to share the occasion.

Cobh was formerly named Queenstown to honour a visit from Queen Victoria, but in the early 1920s the local council met to discuss changing the name. No decision was arrived at and no vote was taken on the matter, which was deferred to a later meeting, which never took place. “Cobh” was temporarily given as a substitute.

I suggest that if Queen Elizabeth does come here, the name “Cobh” could formally be changed to “Queenstown”.

This would help to foster goodwill among all our peoples.
