Savoy closure shows small-town mentality

I AM stunned that a venue of the size and calibre of the Savoy Theatre in Cork can be allowed to close with the city’s designation as Capital of Culture only 14 months away.

By removing the only medium-sized venue in the city, the courts have seriously impeded the chances of running spectacular events during this very important year.

As a venue, the Savoy was known far and wide for the quality and diversity of its acts. My sister and her friends enjoyed going to the well-run junior events there and I have heard nothing but good reports and memories from everyone I have spoken to in relation to the venue.

I think that this decision by the courts exposes a small-town mentality that Cork has to grow out of before 2005 if we are to take full advantage of the opportunities a Capital of Culture brings.
