City of Culture gets no bouquets for its care of elderly patients

WHILE Cork is celebrating being a ‘city of culture,’ I’m shocked to discover that the city’s culture does not include care or consideration for the elderly.

You can have fireworks, art, music and song, but care for the elderly is not included and does not follow all the celebrations.

My sister, a widow in her 80s, with no family, recently returned home on two crutches after orthopaedic surgery. In her first week at home, no medical person called to check if she was alright and could cope. This treatment by the local health service is disgraceful to a woman who has worked all her life and paid her taxes. She also paid for her operation through her health insurance.

Before she left the convalescent home (which she also paid for) several attempts were made by the staff there to arrange a home-help, but their phone calls were never answered and even though messages were left on the answering service, no call-back resulted.

Talk about help for the Third World - we could do with a bit at home, too.

Yes, I am family, but at 82 and living 200 miles away, I can’t easily help. I think her treatment is deplorable. Shame on you, Cork!
