Let’s do our duty now

CONGRATULATIONS to the Irish Examiner for highlighting the Darfur crisis in Sudan (August 23) just when one was beginning to believe that the impending starvation of millions of people was merely a figment of the imagination.

A fable popular in South America concludes that mañana (tomorrow) is the word the devil chooses to combat mankind’s conscientious tendencies.

It is indeed easy for us here to put emergency situations like Darfur on the long finger; perhaps it’s easier to empathise with a tearful Paula Radcliffe or Sonia O’Sullivan than a starving mother and child in Sudan.
