Airport chiefs should put it up to Cullen over passenger facilities

THE letter from June Scannell regarding lack of facilities at Cork airport (Irish Examiner, January 6) is a timely reminder that action is needed if the airport is not to remain at the bottom of the list of political priorities.

Airport chiefs should put it up to Cullen over passenger facilities

The Government decided to give autonomy to Cork airport and appointed a new board in September 2004.

In the meantime everything has been slowed down and Cork is now unable to purchase toilet paper without getting approval from the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA). It is a scandal that covered walkways are not available in this day and age. If even half the rumours are correct the new terminal will be lacking so many features - because Dublin has axed them - that it will end up as an expensive joke.

There is every chance that the terminal will not be debt-free as promised because the DAA claim they have little or no funds and what they have they will spend at Dublin.

This is an affront to the long-suffering customers of Cork airport. Someone needs to say ‘enough is enough’.

Cork has a board with no authority. It would be as well if the whole autonomy plan was dropped because now we have 12 busy people wasting their time. Perhaps they should put it up to Transport Minister Martin Cullen and threaten to resign unless the situation is remedied.

In the meantime, disabled, elderly and frail passengers will have to walk half a kilometre in the wind and rain. What a shambles.
