Don’t put all of us into the same box

IN the article ‘Bad stars fuel teenage drink abuse’ (Irish Examiner, October 15) Larry Ryan of Behaviour and Attitudes, the market research company, is quoted as saying, “kids regard alcohol as being massively central to popular culture”.

Don’t put all of us into the same box

I would like to point out that young people are not merely an amorphous mass who all think and behave alike, as this seems to imply.

I am 14 years old and I am considered something of a nonconformist because I neither drink alcohol nor have any desire to do so.

Young people are considered by many to be all the same. This notion is extremely inaccurate. We are individuals, not a single organism with a universal mind. Will society please wake up?

I WAS very annoyed to see a picture of students in conflict with gardaí (Irish Examiner, October 13).

Once again students are portrayed as the part of society that does nothing but rant and shout over one issue or another.

Many would also look at this photo and bring up the other “typical” traits of students - binge drinkers, loud and disruptive behaviour... the list is endless.

I’d like to draw readers’ attention to the fact that we are not all like this. There are many students out there who prefer a night at the cinema followed by a pizza and then home. Many of us have no interest in the clubbing and drinking culture.

When will the media stop branding us all with the same label?
