Child abuse: let the courts rule

I REFER to Ronán Mullen’s column of January 8 which, I felt, was very slanted.

Child abuse: let the courts rule

Cardinal Connell, it has been shown, did ignore allegations of abuse that was why Marie Collins pursued him with such vigour. By his inertia, abuse of minors went unpunished.

It defies belief to suggest that the Dublin diocese had no knowledge of abuse by Noel Reynolds only 'concerns' expressed by others and that the 'experts' recommended 'supported ministry' which, I suspect, means not being left alone to his own devices, and then to say they didn't regard the priest as a threat to children.

If any citizen is accused or suspected of sexual abuse of a minor they are subject to the law of the land, and not the 'water pistol' canon law of a particular church. The only 'experts' we need here are judge and jury.

Mr Mullen says the Church needs a more proactive media strategy. Does he mean better damage control? He also suggests Cardinal Connell was wise not to give extended radio or TV interviews because he is not a good media performer. One should not have to perform in matters of such importance; he is only asked to tell the truth. My respects to Marie Collins and Ken Reilly.
