It is fashionable in ‘southern’ media to uncritically characterise Donegal’s response to constitutional referenda as a uniform ‘no’. A more rigorous examination of the facts does not support this view (c.f. referendum on judicial pay).

The current referendum on marriage equality is being sympathetically and critically examined throughout Donegal by a people, with the time and education, to decide if it is the most appropriate remedy for an acknowledged omission.

The dilemma is how to give constitutional recognition, respect and protection to two mutually exclusive types of union.
