Civil disruption to honour suffragette

On Tuesday, June 10, between 1pm and 2pm an hour of civil disruption will be held in honour of suffragette Emily Wilding Davison who was killed at the Derby on June 4, 1913 by the King’s horse in her attempt to bring public attention to the fact that women did not have the vote.

Civil disruption to honour suffragette

Women and men will walk across the street continuously during lunch hour using the traffic lights drawing attention to the numerous causes that need addressing in the Ireland of 2014.

Throughout the ages, many people have inspired action by standing up to state corruption and dictatorship.

One such woman was Emily Wilding Davison.

To commemorate her deed, we invite women and men to come to Kildare Street on Tuesday June 10 when we will bring to the attention of passer-byes, the many causes which need addressing.

It is a horrific thought that in 2014 Ireland, six people are being made homeless every day; 16 people are having their electricity cut off each week; children are going to school hungry; discretionary medical cards are being taken from sick and vulnerable people; the government is about to charge us for a basic human right and need — water; there is a tax on the family home; and there are plans to charge every individual in this State a universal health charge.

In addition, women still do not have reproductive rights.

All of these services we already pay for with our income tax and stamp duty. It is time for change.
