Killester memorial deserves support

In their contribution, Minister Deenihan and Secretary of State Theresa Villiers MP pointed out (Irish Examiner, March 31) that the newly unveiled Cross of Sacrifice in Glasnevin Cemetery was “no better setting for a memorial to remember the tens of thousands of Irishmen who made the ultimate sacrifice during World Wars.”

Killester memorial deserves support

The Minister and the Secretary of State need reminding that Killester is where some of those veterans were housed.

Currently, the Killester War Memorial Campaign (WWI) has appealed for support to preserve the former British Legion Hall, as a permanent symbol of commemoration and reconciliation in honour of the many Irishmen who served and who lost their lives during WWI.

At a recent commemorative event held in Killester some participants wore Poppies and Easter Lilies together, to respect traditions.

If Killester can achieve that level of equality and respect for diversity, surely they might also expect the Minister to step in and support their admirable efforts to protect their local hall.

Crosses of Sacrifice are important reminders of the cost of war, but peace and reconciliation on this island begins in communities, and not graveyards.
