Myles Duffy’s statement that (Irish Examiner, Letters, April 14) Britain should ‘exonerate’ the executed of 1916 is incorrect.

Minister Heather Humphreys’, (Irish Examiner April 9) call for a joint permanent memorial to 1916 British Soldiers is a shared history concept gone too far which denigrates those Irish Volunteers who are to be commemorated.

The revisionist contribution of John Bruton (August 5) is concerning, and shows that a cohort of individuals still believe that 1916 was unnecessary, while suggesting Home Rule was inevitable. Therein lies the deceit.

In their contribution, Minister Deenihan and Secretary of State Theresa Villiers MP pointed out (Irish Examiner, March 31) that the newly unveiled Cross of Sacrifice in Glasnevin Cemetery was “no better setting for a memorial to remember the tens of thousands of Irishmen who made the ultimate sacrifice during World Wars.”

The inclusion of records of 49,000 Irish WWI dead in a new digital archive online is important for remembering soldiers (Jan 11).

The Budget announcement shows that the Labour Party sold us a pup at the last election and can be assured that every old dog, (the grey vote), will not forget those failed promises.

Jack Desmond (Irish Examiner, Aug 26) berates Michael Moriarty for his contribution and suggests the students from Dublin are in Egypt supporting the struggle for democracy, which begs the question: Does Mr Desmond understand the dynamic of Egyptian politics and the religious fundamentalism associated with the Muslim Brotherhood and its pursuit of Sharia Law?

One of the last surviving Irish soldiers granted a pardon after fighting against Nazi Germany has laid a wreath to remember his comrades.

Irish soldiers who were blacklisted for joining the British army to fight Nazi Germany have been vindicated after almost 70 years.

Tom Cooper (Letters, Sept 19) avoids the central points of one letter and comments on the odious association between an aggressive predatory army and a children’s charity.

I must admit to having been unaware of the upcoming charity fundraising event at the K Club to raise funds for the Jack and Jill Foundation, a most worthy cause, until I read the letter from Peter Mulvany (Irish Examiner, Sept 14).

The planned appearance on October 5th of the Band of the Irish Guards at the K Club in Co Kildare at a charity event which is being organised by the Security and Emergency Services Ireland Forum (SESIF) has apparently raised the ire of some members of our Republican community.

Peter Mulvany (Letters, Aug 28) in response to my letter in which I opposed the retired Garda commemoration for members of the Royal Irish Constabulary, said “there are many Irish citizens who have a British dimension to their Irishness and vice versa; and no doubt there are members of the Garda who may have family links with the former RIC who feel it is their duty to remember the fallen”.

Dan Buckley’s analysis (Unsung Heroes of War, Jul 2) credits Robert Widders and his book as galvanising our campaign, which is untrue.

Donal Kennedy’s comments (Jun 25) about Defence Forces deserters, oaths, dishonour and shame are interesting.

Following the announcement in Dáil Eireann on June 12 by Minister for Justice, Equality, and Defence Alan Shatter, on behalf of the Irish Government, the Irish Soldiers Pardons Campaign (WW2), would like to take this opportunity to commend him for having the wisdom, compassion and moral courage in taking positive action to enable a resolution on the pardons issue to be achieved which will remove in so far as practical the stigmaof dishonour attached to those named as dismissed for desertion in the republished blacklist.

In response to the efforts of campaigners (Irish Examiner, May 22), the recent assertion by Minister Jimmy Deenihan that it was not clear how the National Memorial site in Moore Street could be developed as a battlefield site is disingenuous.

K Nolan makes valid points (Letters, May 9) in his criticism of social media sites and his comments on internet Nazis being faced down is to the point.

Mr Cooper rightly points out (Letters, Feb 15) the failure of the State re the Bethany House victims, but makes mischevious and caustic comment by comparing the experiences of alleged deserters to these children.

The conversation on the neutrality issue within the columns of the Irish Examiner is enlightening and long overdue.

Tom Cooper’s assumptions (Jan 26) about the raison d’être for our campaign are off the mark.

IF Nick Foley (Letters, July 13) had studied the points made in previous correspondence he should have been able to grasp that our campaign is grounded on adherence to article 34.1 and article 40.3 of the constitution relating to the administration of justice and personal rights.

TOM COOPER (July 5) mischievously extracts from US military law in his attempt to rebut and ridicule Gary Adams’ appeal for a pardon for Irish World War Two alleged deserters.

I WISH to express my gratitude for the support given by the Irish Examiner to the campaign — now successful — for pardons for those unjustly shot at dawn in World War I.

NOW that the 87th anniversary of the silencing of the guns of the Great War has just passed, is it possible to hope that justice at last will be served on behalf of the 306 brave and patriotic young men cruelly shot at dawn by their own comrades in the misguided belief of instilling discipline.
