Ending fluoridation

It is unlikely that a private member’s bill to end the enforced fluoridation of water in Ireland will get anywhere.

Both the Government parties and Fianna Fáil have indicated they will oppose it.

Despite this, it is a worthwhile effort as it means that such an important issue is being debated in the Dáil. The bill is the work of Independent TD Catherine Murphy and members of the Dáil’s technical group.

Water fluoridation was first introduced in Ireland in the 1960s as a dental health measure, but we now remain one of the few countries in Europe to continue the practice.

Supporters insist that it is essential for public health, yet countries such as Holland and Germany have excellent public health policy and neither country puts fluoride in the water supply.
