He couldn’t stand it. He couldn’t sit still. Cillian O’Connor was watching Mayo propel themselves towards the ultimate dream in a game that would have a seismic impact on countless people. It was driving him mad.

When the Ballintubber clubman was playing for Mayo, nerves never crowded his mind. The posts and the white lines and the ball thrown in all provided sufficient outlets to expend that energy. But that seat in the stand that he grudgingly occupied for much of 2026 was nightmare fuel.
