Money well spent on RTÉ programme subtitling

IN a brief, respectful response to Paul Galvin’s (October 6) letter in praise of Vincent Browne’s debate with the Presidential candidates and TV3’s programming versus RTÉ, I would like to highlight the fact that all TV3 current affairs programmes, including the Vincent Browne show and the debates during the General and Presidential elections, were/are inaccessible to all hearing impaired people as subtitling is not provided.

Money well spent on RTÉ programme subtitling

So, no matter how good the perceived “quality” of the programmes are to the hearing audience they are provided exclusively for them.

RTÉ provides a superb subtitling service, where virtually all news, current affairs, documentaries and home-produced programmes are subtitled. While people may rile against paying their TV licence, I’d like to remind them that it is very well spent in addressing equality of provision for hearing impaired people.
