Local approach to promotion of Irish

IN response to Darren Mac an Phríora (Letters, July 13) regarding the Irish language, I wish to point out that Foras na Gaeilge is the body responsible for the promotion of the Irish language throughout the island of Ireland — a role which involves facilitating and encouraging the use of Irish in the public and private arena on an all-island basis.

In accordance with this role, Foras na Gaeilge supports and funds many Irish language bodies throughout the island and also funds a variety of different schemes and initiatives — one of which is the scheme we’re currently announcing to promote the language at a local level.

We believe that for people to make the Irish language their own, the provision of resources at local level is of utmost importance.

An tUas Mac an Phríona refers to marketing the Irish language.

Although Foras na Gaeilge does a lot of work in this area, the particular scheme we are undertaking at present is not a marketing scheme.

This is open to all communities and we are encouraging those where the language hasn’t traditionally had a strong presence seriously to consider applying for the scheme.
