Archbishop’s message - The true meaning of Easter

“In a succession of images many never thought possible, we have glimpsed the true meaning of Easter,” Archbishop Seán Brady declared yesterday in a moving and thought-provoking address that deserves to be read with care and consideration.

Archbishop’s message - The true meaning of Easter

The succession of images to which he was referring were not religious apparitions. He was obviously alluding to scenes like the Democratic Unionist Party and Sinn Féin agreeing that they will share power together, Gerry Adams and Ian Paisley sitting alongside one another, or the First Minister designate shaking hands with the Taoiseach in Dublin and even joking about the scene of the Battle of the Boyne.

Archbishop Brady emphasised that we have particular reason to rejoice this Easter. Enemies are beginning to talk with each other at long last. He called it “a glimpse of the true meaning of Easter”.
