Cars free-for-all on beautiful beach

ON Sunday last I visited Bettystown beach, which is near where I live in Co Meath. I was delighted by its beauty, but appalled in equal measure by what I saw.

There were about 50 cars parked on the beach.

This is understandable when the area may not have sufficient parking, but there were no restrictions whatsoever. Cars were spread out all over the nicest parts of the beach between the dry sand and the sea. Not only that, there was free-for-all driving up and down the beach.

This is totally unacceptable when young children are playing on the sand and running around as children do.

You may as well leave them unattended on an open road as turn your back when they are playing on Bettystown beach.

At least there are speed restrictions on our roads.

A beach such as Bettystown is a beautiful amenity to be enjoyed by all, but it seems now that one can’t even walk on it without having to be alert to traffic.

Many beaches have restricted this practice and should be commended for doing so.

I cannot fathom what purpose is served by driving up and down a beach.

Has driving become the new walk on the beach? I think the county council needs to act before a child is killed on our beach.
