Met Éireann forecasts unsettled August bank holiday as rain ends sunny spell

The prolonged spell of sunny and dry weather is set to end later this week, with conditions becoming more unsettled ahead of the August bank holiday weekend, according to Met Éireann.

Temperatures across Cork are expected to be relatively subdued. Wednesday will see patchy rain move southeastwards from the northwest later in the morning before gradually clearing through the afternoon.

Temperatures of 17C to 24C are expected, with light to moderate winds.

The festival begins on Thursday, when scattered showers are forecast. Friday is also expected to bring sunny spells interspersed with showers.

Saturday will see a mix of cloud and sunny spells with isolated showers, while temperatures are expected to reach around 21C in westerly breezes.

Bank holiday outlook uncertain

Met Éireann said the forecast for the remainder of the bank holiday weekend remains uncertain.

Current indications suggest Sunday will be largely dry with occasional showers, before rain moves in from the southwest on Monday.

There are currently no weather warnings in place nationwide.

Firefighters continue to tackle isolated wildfire hotspots in parts of Ireland, with small outbreaks reported in the Comeragh Mountains on Tuesday.

Tipperary County Council said the situation at Slievenamon "remains stable".

“Crews will continue to manage these isolated hotspots as part of the ongoing response effort,” the council said.

The council added that further isolated outbreaks of fire activity were to be expected following the recent wildfires.

“Outbreaks of fire activity such as those experienced this morning are to be expected following a wildfire event of this scale. Coillte crews are also managing these situations, supported where necessary by emergency services.” 

Meanwhile, around 4,000 people have been evacuated from tourist sites near Bordeaux as wildfires continue to burn in France and Spain.
