Two dead and two airlifted to hospital following Louth crash

Two elderly people have died and two others have been airlifted to hospital for treatment of serious injuries after a road collision in Louth.
A male driver and a female passenger died in a collision between two cars at The Bush, Co Louth, shortly after 3pm yesterday.
Gardaí say both of the deceased were in their 70s. Their bodies have been removed to Louth County Hospital for post mortem examinations.
Meanwhile, the male driver of the second car and his female passenger were both airlifted to Dublin for treatment in Beaumont Hospital and Mater Misericordiae University Hospital for treatment “of serious injuries”, said gardaí.
A garda statement said: “A Garda Family Liaison Officer (FLO) has been appointed to support the family of the deceased. The Coroner has been notified.”
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have been travelling on the R173 between Dundalk and Carlingford, Co. Louth between 2:30pm and 3:30pm on Thursday 16th July 2026.
Road users who may have camera footage (including dash cam or mobile phone recordings) are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
