Irish Rail services disrupted after train and car collide in Co Mayo

The line between Westport and Athlone is due to remain closed until further notice.

Train services in Co Mayo continue to be disrupted following a “serious incident” where a train collided with a car on Thursday evening.

The car stuck the westbound train at a user-operated level crossing at Kiltybo, Ballyhaunis, just before 9 pm.

Emergency services responded to help a number of people in the car. It was the second disruption of the day on the Westport to Dublin line, after the train struck a tractor on the level crossing between Portarlington and Tullamore.

The line between Westport and Athlone is due to remain closed until further notice.

Replacement bus transfers have been organised for commuters, while the Banilla to Manulla services will operate through to Claremorris.

In a post on social media platform X, Iarnród Eireann said: “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by today’s incidents.

“We’ll continue to do our best to provide clear and timely updates as info becomes available.

“A sincere thank you to all passengers/staff for your patience, understanding and cooperation during this challenging day.”
