Temperatures could hit freezing or lower this weekend, Met Éireann has said.

According to the forecaster, the mercury could fall as low as 0C on both Saturday night and Sunday night as a cold snap sets in.

Saturday will be mostly cool and dry, though there will also be decent spells of sunshine and scattered showers moving in from the northeast of the country. By Saturday evening, these showers will be largely confined to the north.

Temperatures on Saturday will range between 9C and 12C.

By Saturday night, however, Met Éireann says temperatures will have fallen back to 0C to 5C, with some grass frost also possible.

Like Saturday, Sunday will be mainly dry and bright, though with some showers predicted for the west. Temperatures during the day will be quite cool, between 9C and 11C.

On Sunday night, temperatures will drop to between 0C and 5C, and may even fall to -1C in some parts of Munster and the midlands. Once again, grass frost is a possibility in certain areas.

As for Friday night, there will be a mix of clear spells and scattered showers, particularly in the west and north. Met Éireann also says there is a slight chance of hail in these areas.

Temperatures tonight will range from 3C to 7C.
