Minister for Transport unable to prevent Luas strikes

The Acting Minister for Transport, has said he does not think there is anything that he can do to prevent the Luas strike going ahead tomorrow and Monday.

Luas drivers have scheduled two days' strike action to coincide with the Easter Rising centenary commemoration.

Drivers at SIPTU last week voted to reject proposals from the Workplace Relations Commission of pay increases of 18.7% over 33 months.

Acting Transport Minister Pascal Donohoe has said he can't intervene in industrial relations issues: “As acting Minister I have a whole number of responsibilities that I am actively in charge of on a daily basis.

“But the way in which Industrial relations matters are settled is through the Labour court and is through the Workplace Relations Commission,

“And it is the job of any Minister, caretaking or not, to support them and that is what I will continue to do.”
