Man, 55, who died in water off Castletownbere Pier named locally

A man who died after an incident in the water in Castletownbere in West Cork on Saturday has been named locally.

Damien McGuinness, aged 55, from Church Road in Killybegs, Co Donegal, died after getting into difficulty in the water off Castletownbere Pier at approximately 5.30pm on yesterday evening.

Gardaí, emergency services personnel, and members of Castletownbere Coastguard — the local RNLI lifeboat — also attended the scene.

After being removed from the water, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was subsequently removed from the scene to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital, where an autopsy will be carried out in due course. A file is also being prepared for the coroner.

A notice shared on RIP.ie on Sunday confirmed the death of the Killybegs man.

"Predeceased by his father Peter. Sadly missed by his mother Susan, sister Claire, brother Seamus, beloved nieces Lauryn and Lara, aunty, uncle, cousins, friends and neighbours," the notice reads. 

Funeral details have not yet been announced.

Castletownbere is currently hosting its popular Festival of the Sea, which attracts large crowds to the area each year. The festival began on Friday and will continue until Saturday, August 8.
