Man, 50s, dies after getting into difficulty in water off Castletownbere Pier

A man has died after getting into difficulty in the water at Castletownbere Pier in West Cork.

Emergency services personnel responded to the incident, which happened at approximately 5.30pm on Saturday evening.

Castletownbere Coastguard, the local RNLI lifeboat, also attended the scene. 

"A male, aged in his 50s was taken from the water a short time later," a garda spokesperson told the Irish Examiner.

"He was pronounced deceased at the scene."

The body of the man has since been removed from the scene to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital, where an autopsy will be carried out in due course, the spokesperson added.

A file will also be prepared for the Coroner."

Castletownbere is currently hosting its popular Festival of the Sea, which attracts large crowds to the area each year. The festival began on Friday and will continue until Saturday, August 8.
