Glen Hansard to be honoured with public wake on Bank Holiday Monday

The Oscar-winning Irish musician and activist died in a motorcycle crash on Wednesday morning.

Musician Glen Hansard will be honoured with a public wake on Bank Holiday Monday in Dublin.

The life of The Frames frontman and Commitments actor will be celebrated at the Baroque Chapel of the Irish Museum of Modern Art between 11am and 4pm, where his remains will lie in repose.

Mr Hansard died tragically at the age of 56 following a single-vehicle motorcycle crash in the early hours of Wednesday in west Dublin. The singer-songwriter had performed at a trad session at the local pub the Wren’s Nest just hours before his death.

His funeral will take place at St Patrick’s Cathedral at 1.30pm on Tuesday. The service will be public, albeit in-person access to the cathedral itself is likely to be limited given the potential scale of the service.

The funeral will also be live-streamed, with music to be provided by Mr Hansard’s friends and family.

His family has requested that any donations be made to either the Simon Community or Ukrainian Action.

A funeral notice for Mr Hansard said he would be “deeply regretted and lovingly remembered“ by his family and friends and “by the many people throughout Ireland and across the world whose lives were touched, inspired and enriched by his music, friendship and generosity”.
