Irish Rail says graffiti on trains has caused damage of over €250,000, so far this year.

Two people have been made to clean up future graffiti after they were caught painting graffiti on trains in Inchicore rail works, as part of an Irish Rail sting operation.

The men, from Dublin and Cork, are also required to pay compensation to a security guard who was assaulted.

They will also clean up future acts of graffiti on the Iarnrod Eireann fleet over the next six months.

Barry Kenny from Irish Rail, says he is pleased that the vandals have been appropriately punished.

"So we've been proactively trying to tackle this and these two individuals were caught as part of a sting operation in Inchicore works, so we're so pleased that the court has treated these acts of vandalism with seriousness and we certainly look forward to welcoming the two vandals up to Inchicore to clean up the acts from other graffiti attacks."
