HSE investigate 'slapping and forced feeding' allegations at centre for vulnerable adults
An investigation is underway into allegations of serious mistreatment at a centre for vulnerable adults in Co. Mayo.
The Health Service Executive has confirmed it has received complaints of slapping and force feeding at the facility.
The HSE says it is taking allegations of abuse at Aras Attracta in Swinford, Co. Mayo, very seriously and a number of measures have already been put in place in light of the claims.
The facility is a residential respite centre for adults with intellectual disabilities.
All staff alleged to have carried out the abuse, which included slapping and forced feeding, have been put off-duty for the duration of the investigation.
The Gardaí and HIQA have also been notified of the allegations
In a statement, the HSE said actions such as those alleged are "wholly unacceptable in any facility that provides care to vulnerable people".
An independent expert is to lead the HSE investigation and Aras Attracta will be subject to review to ensure the standards of care there meet the needs of its service users.
