Man jailed for arson attack that killed one and injured two others
A 23-year-old Dublin man has been jailed for seven and a half years for an arson attack at an apartment complex in Smithfield, Dublin that killed a man and injured two others.
Jamie Maguire with an address at Blackhall Street ignited the fatal blaze by setting fire to a car in the underground car park that led to the death of John Donohoe at Smithfield Gate apartments on August 17 2008.
The court heard Jamie Maguire set a car alight and then fled the scene when he became aware there were 3 other people in the underground parking lot.
John Donohoe, who was taking refuge there for the night, died weeks later having suffered horrific burns.
His girlfriend and another man were seriously injured in the blaze.
Firefighters were alerted to the scene after 5am and residents of the apartments were evacuated and put up in a nearby hotel.
The damage totalled €4.6m.
The court heard Maguire also set fire to two other cars on nearby Bridgefoot street after a row with his girlfriend and a night out partying in a limo.
Judge Martin Nolan called his actions obviously dangerous and extremely reckless.
