Dublin researchers reveal superbug breakthrough

Researchers in Dublin said today that they have made a breakthrough in the fight against superbugs.

A team of scientists from Dublin City University (DCU) and Trinity College Dublin have identified a mechanism which allows people to defend themselves against the hospital superbug CDI.

It is hoped that the discovery could save thousands of lives in the future.

Dr Christine Loscher from DCU was a member of the team and said that the findings could help to prevent superbugs and treat patients in the future.

"Now that we know exactly what our immune system needs to be able to clear this infection it means that we can start to design therapies and help them clear the infection on their own," she said.

"That will be extrememly important in terms of how we develop our research and how we actually get to the stage where we will help patients."
