US tissue firm to let 77 workers go in Finglas

There was more bad news on the jobs front today with the announcement that 77 jobs are to go in Dublin.

US company Georgia-Pacific, which manufactures tissue and disposable paper products, is scaling back its operations in Finglas.

Hugh McGlasson, managing director of Georgia-Pacific Ireland Ltd, said: “This is a very difficult time for the company and its employees, as we are proposing a number of redundancies."

"The cost base we have in Ireland is unsustainable for both current and expected market conditions, and it makes us uncompetitive.

"We need to act now to consolidate parts of our network and safeguard the viability of our business.”

The company stated that its focus was on those affected by today’s announcement, and confirmed that management would work with employees and their relevant representatives to help minimise the impact of the programme.

It confirmed that a consultation process was now underway, but that if the proposal is implemented, some redundancies would be affected between the period February to July 2010.
