Four-try Buttimer helps Munster monster Leinster in emphatic opener

Women's Interpro: MUNSTER 39 LEINSTER 19 

Munster launched their Vodafone Women’s Interprovincial Championship title defence in powerful style in Cork on Saturday as they brushed aside Leinster for an emphatic opening victory of the 2026 campaign.

Munster hooker Beth Buttimer emphasised the home side’s physical dominance with four tries in a player of the match performance as Matt Brown’s side looked to have reintegrated their international players into a winning squad more smoothly than the visitors.

Centre Alana McInerny, tighthead prop Eilis Cahill and wing Katie Corrigan also scored for Munster while the defending champions also denied their arch rivals both losing and try bonus points. Leinster scored through captain Sarah Delaney, No.8 Erin King, the Ireland skipper, and replacement Shona White.

Munster’s scoreboard total could have been more impressive but fly-half Enya Breen drew a blank from the kicking tee before succumbing to an ankle knock with replacement Catriona Finn slotting two conversions from her three attempts.

The champions hit the ground running, reclaiming Breen’s kick-off and winning a penalty on the edge of the Leinster 22. The fly-half’s kick to the corner set up a lineout drive from which Buttimer scored her opening try inside two minutes.

Munster doubled their lead 10 minutes later, once again through their maul. Though Leinster defended the drive more effectively, the home side moved the ball through their backs for McInerney to score.

Next it was Leinster’s turn to profit from close range, Delaney scoring from the tail of a maul on 25 minutes with Ireland number 10 Dannah O’Brien making no mistake with the conversion to make it 10-7.

Munster’s reply followed on quickly, again from a lineout though this time the ball going straight to the backs. Provincial debutante, Ireland flanker Grace Moore, made a big carry before the ball reached Buttimer to score her second on 29 minutes. The try was touched down behind the posts but Breen’s simple conversion was foiled by a charge down by Leinster wing Maggie Boylan and Munster took a 15-7 lead into the half-time break.

That advantage was stretched five minutes into the second half when Ireland prop Cahill collected her try with a powerful finish from close range to bring up the try bonus point before Buttimer completed her hat-trick on 56 minute with another maul finish, Finn slotting the conversion to make it 27-7.

Leinster hit back with Munster full-back Aoife Corey in the sin bin, converting some sustained pressure through King’s try, again converted by her Ireland team-mate O’Brien but any hopes of a comeback were undone when tighthead prop Linda Djougang was sent to the sin-bin on 66 minutes.

Corrigan’s pace told down the right wing against a stretched visiting defence on 69 minutes with Finn’s conversion making it 34-14. And though replacement White grabbed a third try of the game for Leinster, Buttimer had the last laugh at Virgin Media Park with her fourth try at the death.

Munster’s title defence continues on home turf in Cork with the visit of Ulster to Leeside next Saturday while Leinster must regroup to face Connacht in Dublin on their return to Laya Arena, their only home game of the 2026 championship.
