A Fianna Fáil cumann in Co Clare has overwhelmingly voted in favour of a motion of no confidence in the Taoiseach over his attitude to the Shannon controversy.

The Ennis Number One Cumann is accusing Bertie Ahern of failing to provide political leadership following Aer Lingus' decision to end services between Shannon and Heathrow.

It is also accusing him of failing to protect the social and economic fabric of society in the west of the country.

The no-confidence motion is the first ever to be passed in the current leadership of Fianna Fáil at any level within the party.

Last night, the Taoiseach ruled out Government intervention to overturn the Aer Lingus decision, but said all efforts would be made to find a replacement service and protect the economy in Shannon and its hinterland.
