Three killed on roads in 24 hours
Three people were killed on the country’s roads in 24 hours, gardaí today confirmed.
This comes as new figures released by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) show a drop in the number of road deaths for the first half of the year to 160.
The latest incident took place this morning in Kinnegad, Co Westmeath.
A man who was a passenger in a car was killed after an accident on the main N6 between Dublin and Galway.
No other vehicle was involved.
The driver of the car was brought to Mullingar General Hospital for treatment.
A 57-year-old woman died yesterday afternoon following a two-car crash in Co Galway.
The incident happened just after midday at Oxgrove Bridge, Killimor, when the car in which she was travelling collided with another vehicle.
She was taken to Portiunculla Hospital, but later died.
A 35-year-old man was killed last night when the motorcycle he was riding hit a road sign on the N32 in Coolock.
The accident happened at 8.20pm. The man was taken to Beaumont Hospital but later died from his injuries.
Road traffic deaths are down 39 compared with the same period last year.
The RSA said 160 people were killed in the first six months of 2007 compared with 199 last year.
However, the RSA has warned the summer months are the most dangerous on the country’s roads.
It highlighted in particular the increased number of farming vehicles and appealed for drivers to take extra care.
