Police shoot driver after patrol car rammed

Police shot the driver of a stolen car after he rammed their vehicle in the early hours of this morning.

The victim is in hospital but his condition is not thought to be life threatening.

Officers fired a number of shots and the incident has been reported to the Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman.

One man was arrested.

The confrontation happened at around 1.40am this morning in the Rockmount area of Dundonald after police in a patrol car noticed two vehicles driving along the Comber Road towards east Belfast.

After realising one of the cars, a Vauxhall Monaro, had been stolen, police followed the vehicle, cornering it in a cul de sac where the collision took place.

A spokesman for the Ombudsman’s office said investigators were at the scene.
