Gardaí investigating €1m fraud at Dept of Education

The Department of Education has confirmed that Gardaí are investigating allegations of fraud at its offices in Athlone, Co Westmeath.

The department is also conducting its own inquiry into the matter, which is believed to involve the alleged misappropriation of more than €1m in funds.

Reports this morning said the investigation was centred on an official who authorised payments to a number of external sources.

Gardaí are reportedly planning to interview officials from the Department of Education and the Department of Social and Family Affairs in connection with the case.
